About Kira L. Newman, MD, PhD
Kira Newman, MD, PhD, is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) specialist and Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Michigan. She is currently a member of the executive board of Rainbows in Gastro, a nonprofit organization and affinity group founded by sexual and gender minority (SGM) physicians and trainees in North America. She is also a member of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) Practice Parameters Committee and an external expert reviewer for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Sexually Transmitted Infections Guideline: Proctitis section.
Dr. Newman formerly served as a member of the American Gastroenterological Association’s Women’s Committee and was recognized as a leader in health equity with a Healio Disruptive Innovators Award in 2025. She also received a career development award from the ACG and is actively involved in research focused on restoring normal microbiome function in IBD, as well as on health outcomes among LGBTQ+ people with IBD and other chronic digestive and liver diseases.
